A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” declared the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term finished the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The building of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a significant growth of its duties in civilian projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party demanded an prompt pause in the development and management of all similar projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."
In response, the president insisted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national projects.
